There’s often a certain apprehension with mum’s to be that we see about going on holiday when pregnant, especially in the third trimester. However, family breaks can be much easier with a few simple steps.
- Choose a cooler destination: we’re not built for 40 degrees in the UK, so choose yourself a cooler climate to relax in, or go at a cooler time of year. If you do find yourself in a heatwave, keep hydrated, out of the full sun, in the pool or air conditioned rooms.
- Take time: Give yourself extra time, as stress is not the aim of a holiday! Allow for delays, traffic, and if you do find yourself held up, relax and let someone else do the worrying for you.
- Insist on the best: When you reach your destination, try out the bed and pillows and if you’re not happy, or need more support, ask. Hotels and guesthouses are very keen to please these days in the age of instant social media reviews.
- Travel light: often there are ways to limit your travel luggage these days (budget airlines do it by charging excessive fees!), so take less, make use of laundry services so you don’t need too much, and buy local goods once you’re at your destination. Remember your midwife notes though, and don’t forget to check your travel insurance covers you.
Enjoy your holidays, wherever you are this summer, vacation or stay-cation: and if you’re pregnant with your first, make the most of it!
Ed, Jo and the boys will be away on holiday themselves this summer: the centre closes at the end of morning clinic on Wednesday 23rd August, reopening in the morning on Friday 1st September. Please note that we shall be contactable by phone and email, though please allow a little more time than usual for us to get back to you.
