We have been looking at how chiropractic helps you to achieve your goals recently. Over the weekend Jo and I were at the biggest chiropractic conference in the UK, Chiropractic Essentials, run by the fastest growing association in the UK, the United Chiropractic Association. Previously I have spoken about relieving symptoms, correcting your spine and keeping you at or near to 100%. However, a talk there motivated me to change that. Firstly chiropractic is not about relieving symptoms, that’s just a by-product of being adjusted as your body improves and adapts better: a stop on the way to good health. Secondly there are some people who come to us with structual issues in their spine which are permanent, such as degenerative conditions. A speaker there, Brandi MacDonald, communicated this succinctly to me: I realised, I am setting the wrong goals with you all.
So what can we aim for? We all know chiropractic helps; but what is realistic, given that chiropractic is about improving your nervous system function, increasing spinal and nervous system adaptability, and optimising your health? Well, there’s the answer:
- Improve the ability of your spine to help your nervous system communicate effectively between brain and body.
- Increase the ability of your body to adapt, thereby allowing you to go from a posture that is coping (with pain, pregnancy or stresses), to one which is thriving
- Optimise, get you to your 100%, or as close to that as possible, so that you are nearer to thriving than surviving.
There is a large scope to the chiropractic profession, what I mean by that is that the way we practice, our style and approach to your health, is not defined. This means that you can find different chiropractors offering different types of care. If our approach (above) speaks to you, then please let us know how we can help. If not, then please feel free to ask us for details of another chiropractor who may better suit your needs. Chiropractic helps millions of people to feel and function better every day.
