Today I want to talk about the core principle of chiropractic that leads to a healthier mind and body. Despite this being thought by some to be an old concept, there is plenty of new scientific evidence to suggest that our nervous system needs to run well to allow all parts of your body to function optimally. Furthermore there is growing research suggesting that adjustment from a chiropractor can enhance your nervous system function. Let’s start at the beginning…
There is energy everywhere. The energy moves around in ways that may people consider to be under the control of a Universal Intelligence: some people call this God, The Universe or maybe Nature. It allows us to understand and make sense of the world and events around us. Within each of us this energy is controlled by something we used to call Innate Intelligence, which we see as impulses from the Central Nervous System (CNS). The CNS is responsible, like the conductor of an orchestra, for moving supplies of energy (be it blood flow, muscle contraction or hormone release) around your body.
The aim of chiropractic is to allow the CNS to do its job effectively, therefore allowing our Innate Intelligence the opportunity to express itself – this is true health. A healthy body starts with a healthy mind or CNS. Removing interference on the CNS allows communication with the body to happen without hindrance. To allow this to happen properly you need to be supporting your body with proper nutrition, water, sleep and exercise, whilst minimising stress loads. Suddenly your body knows how to move better (motion), how to sit, stand and lie better (posture), and crucially your body is able to work on those areas that are not healing so well. Over time, with repetition of adjustments (removing CNS interference), taking time to support your body, and making the effort to do exercises as advised, your body can do amazing things. Aches and pains go, the optimal function is achieved, you reach your 100%.
